Just as individual development refers to the evolution of a person, International Development refers to the evolution of a people on a much bigger scale. Mostly, International Development is used in relation to developing countries. However, it is important to note that there is no such thing as a nation or a state that is not in need of development, because there is always room for improvement—in nations, and in individuals.

At RTY, we believe that the best means of development is one that empowers the local people to decide for themselves what changes they would like to see, and to empower them to create these changes.

Yoga has a plethora of benefits to the practitioner. These benefits include, but are certainly not limited to: improved overall physical health, increased ability to heal, heightened ability to learn and retain information, and better mental and emotional wellness.

It has also been shown that yoga instills a sense of peace and harmony and develops spirituality and personal evolution. All of these benefits coincide with the most common themes of International Development initiatives including Health, Education, Peace-building/Conflict Resolution, and Empowerment.

At RTY, we believe that yoga is the most powerful tool for the development of individuals, communities, and nations; it provides a personal and holistic means of addressing pressing issues and creates change from within a people, rather than imposing it from without.

There are two main ways in which yoga can be used as a tool for development:

1. As a means of fostering the development of individuals, providing people with the tools they need to create the life they want to live.

2. As a complementary practice to development initiatives that have already been established and put into action.
